Marion Barry

1936–2014 · Civil rights organizer and four-term Mayor of Washington, D.C.

Marion Barry, the civil rights organizer who became Washington's most prominent and controversial mayor, made Anacostia and Ward 8 his political and personal home base. He lived in the Anacostia section of the city during his mayoralty and later represented Ward 8 on the D.C. Council until his death in 2014. In 2023 Good Hope Road SE was renamed Marion Barry Avenue SE in his honor.
