Georgiana Simpson
1865–1944 · One of the first African American women to earn a Ph.D.
Georgiana Rose Simpson, a Washington-born philologist, in 1921 became one of the first African American women to receive a doctorate in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in German from the University of Chicago at age 55. A longtime D.C. public school teacher, she lived in the Barry Farm–Hillsdale area of Anacostia.
