Garnet C. Wilkinson

1879–1969 · Longtime superintendent of D.C.'s Black public schools

Garnet Crummell Wilkinson led Washington's segregated African American public school system for decades as assistant superintendent in charge of the colored schools (1924–1951). His family settled in the Barry Farm/Hillsdale neighborhood in 1888, where he attended Birney Elementary School, before he built the District's national reputation for Black educational excellence.

Connection to Anacostia: Grew up in Barry Farm/Hillsdale after his family settled there in 1888.
